Center of Narrative Gravity

The paintings in my ongoing Center of Narrative Gravity series are inspired by the work of philosopher Daniel Dennett, who used the phrase as a metaphor for The Self. All follow a similar format: a swirling gradient of colorful marks on top of a swirling gradient of background color. Together, the interaction of colors between these gradients produces a sense of a nebulous center with ambiguous edges whose depth and shape change as you look at it.

Mind Wandering

A series of small, 16x12 inch paintings created for the 2024 exhibition, “Chromatic Wanderings,” these feature symmetric Turing Patterns tilted at a slight perspective with a central glow.

Symmetry Series

An ongoing series of abstract paintings composed around symmetric Turing Patterns where gradients of color interact between the underpainting and the mark-making to produce a sense of luminosity.

Elusive

My “Elusive” paintings are inspired by the philosophical quest to understand the mind, the self, and consciousness. They are comprised by multiple layers of swirling gradients of colors whose interaction produces a sense of depth but also ambiguity: A nebulous core whose boundaries appear to change depending upon the viewer’s distance from the painting.

The Predictive Self

This series of paintings is inspired by the idea of the mind being a kind of prediction machine, where The Self resides in the center between past experiences and future predictions.

Strange Loops

The Strange Loops series is inspired by the writing of Douglas Hofstadter, who coined the phrase in his book, Godel, Escher, Bach, about the workings of the mind.
