New Painting — Portrait of My Father

I’ve just finished a new painting.  This is a portrait of my father.  It’s 20″x16″, acrylic on panel, painted with the new Golden OPEN Acrylics (these are a new formulation of acrylic paint that stays open and workable much longer than traditional acrylics, facilitating paintings like this one where smooth blending is required).

Hey Andrew - very cool - I’d look forward to seeing this in person - very different from a lot of the work you’ve been doing - the color transitions are very nice. I’m really amazed at what can be done with the new acrylics - plus a lot of the interesting glazes and such that are available in acrylic. That’s what I completed my ‘Family Unit, Circa 1970′ with - using the reflex acrylic.

    Rob,
Thanks! Hmmm, this painting probably isn’t going to make it to any gallery as it’s a gift for my Dad and it’ll be hanging in casa Werth… Yeah, I really like working with these Golden OPEN Acrylics so far. Much easier to manage the palette and much better for doing this kind of painting. I’ll keep my more heavily pigmented Golden Heavy Body & Fluid acrylics for my abstract work where I appreciate the fast drying time, though. I’m not familiar with the term “reflex acrylic” — is that a generic term or does it refer to a specific product? Thanks.

Well - the term ‘reflex’ kind of encompasses a pigment that has different appearance attributes at different angles - here is a fun one ‘goniometric’ meaning, different angles - the really cool thing is under different lighting conditions and angles the pigment takes on different characteristics - check it out at http://www.robertgirandola.com - under ‘paintings’ and ‘Family Unit, Circa 1960′ the photograph doesn’t do it justice because a photo is only one angle - I love to work outside the realm of a camera :)
